Frequently Asked Questions
Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated as weight (kg) divided by height (m) squared. It is used by the World Health Organization (WHO) to assess whether a person's weight is appropriate for their height.
BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnostic one. It does not account for muscle-to-fat ratio, age, sex, or body composition. Athletes with high muscle mass may have an elevated BMI. For an accurate assessment, consult a doctor.
According to the WHO classification, a normal BMI ranges from 18.5 to 24.9. Values below 18.5 indicate underweight, and values above 25 indicate overweight.
We use four widely accepted formulas: Devine (1974), Robinson (1983), Miller (1983), and Hamwi (1964). Each formula gives a slightly different result, so we show a combined range — it is the most informative.
