Frequently Asked Questions

Data size units describe the volume of digital information. The basic unit is a byte (8 bits). Larger units — kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, and terabytes — are used to describe file sizes, RAM, and disk capacity.
A megabyte (MB) is based on the decimal system: 1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes. A mebibyte (MiB) is based on binary: 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes. Operating systems typically count in binary units, while disk manufacturers use decimal.
Manufacturers label capacity in decimal units (1 TB = 1,000 GB), but the operating system displays it in binary (1 TB = 1,024 GB). This is why a 1 TB drive shows approximately 931 GB in the system.
Data size is measured in bytes (B, KB, MB), while transfer speed is measured in bits per second (bps, Mbps). One byte equals eight bits, so a speed of 100 Mbps corresponds to roughly 12.5 MB/s.
